Cabins on Stilts in Jamaica
If Jamaica is your destination for a family holiday, with easy access to the beach, and a cottage set on stilts is on your list of things to try, look no further than this all-inclusive resort, The Sunset at the Palms Resort & Spa, which leans towards green and provides something for everyone in Negril.
These cabins are not your run-of-the-mill cabins, but designed so well that they were featured in a well-known architect magazine. There are two good-sized bedrooms in most cabins, bathrooms with showers, balconies with a daybed to relax on, and more, all in renovated décor completed in 2006. There are also a few executive suites with two full bathrooms and sunken living room. They call them all treehouse guestrooms. You’ll have beauty, simplicity and functional convenience with satellite television, phones, and free internet access on the property. There are 65 of these accommodations set on ten acres of tropical gardens, and across the road from Bloody Bay Beach, with five beachfront acres of it belonging to the resort. A crossing guard can assist with walking across the road. Just looking at the photos makes me yearn to go. There are washroom facilities at the beach as well as a beach grill and a bar and showers. This place looks phenomenal.
As an all-inclusive, you have access to the following: meals, beverages, snacks, non-motorized water sports such as kayaking and snorkeling, nature walks, wind surfing, tennis courts, a no-wallet policy as gratuities are covered, an air-conditioned gym, a spa, live reggae music on certain nights, movie theatre night under the stars, island cooking classes, cocktail/bartending classes, pool and hot tub, daytrips with staff that include a variety of options depending on what you want – horseback riding, mountain biking, diving, rafting and much more, with the latter activities requiring extra fees.
There are three restaurants and two bars plus a snack bar on the beach, so something should interest your palate for any meal. You can order a la carte if you decide to go this way rather than buffet.
Now I’ve read that there are programs for children but no one has mentioned those in the reviews, – programs like arts and crafts sessions, story telling and the playground facilities. Ask about these because there might be more set up now. I would also want to know about babysitting as you may want a break after spending the money on this Caribbean vacation.
Reviews: Usually fabulous. People love this intimate resort and keep coming back. Wish there was a fridge to keep water cool. Showers are excellent, food was varied and usually good, staff are superb, resort is a four star, take bug spray for certain times, lush tropical surroundings well maintained and manicured, try the catamaran trip to Rick’s Café, which is supposed to be one of the top bars on this earth, according to a professional travel journalist, rooms 405 to 412 are the best rooms, room 400 is the worst being right next to the bar, bring tip money – which goes against the all-inclusive idea, but people feel staff deserve the extra for their incredible service. Some people were miserable, said to bring lots of bug spray and that the food was so repetitive, rooms don’t have adequate light for reading at night, – many said this, 1.5 hours to hotel from airport, housekeeping very good, meals were alternated from buffet to a la carte every other day, the beach takes a minute to get to and is escorted, agree to a price for the taxi rides on excursions before you take off. There are some people very negative about this place overall, but the majority of reviewers loved it. Amazing the difference in perception. There will always be some vendors on the beach but saying no thank you will give them a polite message. I would want to know what time of the year the bugs are the issue, as it doesn’t come up as a complaint all the time, and if I was big into cooking classes, I would inquire if they are each week or not.
Rates: In checking out rates without the air package, two adults and two children checking in Easter Sunday which is April 4, and staying 7 nights, departing Sunday April 11, would cost $1435.00 per adult and $651.00 per child. Times that and you’ll have an all-inclusive accommodation priced at 4172.00 U.S.
