Bahia Honda Key, Florida State Park

Ever slept in a cottage on stilts? Every kid of all ages’ dream, except for the very unimaginative. Bahia Honda Key is over 500 acres of state park, with three fabulous beaches, Sandspur being two miles long and tempting to walk into as it slants gradually into deeper waters. The park has six cabins – actually bungalows, yes on stilts, with air condition, kitchen, living room, a deck with grill, and sleeps six. You cannot compare these to Gilligans Island shacks. For action, rent a kayak for 10.00. Head to the Looe Key Nation Marine Sanctuary for snorkeling at 30.00 for 3 hours. To head to this Caribbean-looking heaven, drive 3.5 hours from Fort Lauderdale, or if money is not an issue, drive from Miami which usually costs more to fly into. A two-bedroom cabin for six people will set you back about 136.00 at Bahia Honda Key Bayside Cabins. There are also fully equipped camp sites, fishing from shore or in a boat, boat trips for snorkeling expeditions, and a Sand and Sea Nature Center where children can become “rangers” for a spell. There is no established playground by the way, nature is the playground here. You can reach the park at 305-872-2353
